The program, approved unanimously on Wednesday, Nov. 20, is set to bring a fresh wave of community engagement by allowing auxiliary officers to assist with public events, traffic control, and emergencies.
“This program will allow community members to play an active role in supporting our department,” said Leesburg Police Chief Thea Pirnat. “We are grateful to the Town Council for their unanimous support and look forward to working alongside these dedicated volunteers.”
Auxiliary officers won’t have arrest powers but will serve a crucial role in maintaining public order, officials said. They’ll wear specially marked uniforms and drive vehicles labeled “Auxiliary” to distinguish them from regular officers.
The program’s initial focus will be on certified former or retired Virginia law enforcement officers and those with APO certifications from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS). Applicants will go through background checks and specialized training to prepare for their roles.
Leesburg’s police department is finalizing the program details and expects to open applications soon to interested community members.
